Please don’t be upset
when I do not see you at the grocery store,
that moment when I do not pause to pass a smile
or look up to say, Hello.
I may be comparing brands of cereal
but inside my head characters are living
out daring acts of everyday heroism
and holding conversations of their own.
Please don’t call me flakey when I cancel plans to read a book
or take a random day to play in paint or dirt.
The images in my head beg for life, demand life.
I will not be their captor; my mind is not a warden.
Please don’t think me absentminded when I pause mid-sentence…
having forgotten the current topic.
For other sentences are forming waves inside my mind,
they pound against my reality,
a kaleidoscope of words.
